Invasive Species Removal

Des Moines County Conservation will be hosting an Invasive Species Removal Day on March 13th at Starr’s Cave Park and Preserve. Participants will be given the opportunity to make a positive impact on the park by helping to remove invasive species. The event will begin at 12:00 PM and end at 2:00 PM. There is no registration or fee required to join this event.
If participants have PPE, like eye protection and gloves, they are encouraged to bring it as we have a limited supply to lend out. Participants will be instructed on the proper techniques for identifying and removing the invasives and given the tools to successfully remove them. Please dress for the event by wearing long pants, close toed shoes, and a long sleeve shirt. Invasive species are species of organisms that are not native to an ecosystem and cause harm. These species typically demonstrate rapid growth and spread aggressively, invading habitats, and displacing native species. The main invasive species that will be the focus of removal for this event include oriental bittersweet and bush honeysuckle. Oriental bittersweet and bush honeysuckle are both woody perennial plants. Oriental bittersweet grows as a climbing vine that smothers native plants. Bush honeysuckle grows as a shrub, creating dense thickets, which in turn inhibits desirable plant growth.
