Conservation Book Club

Lake Meyer Park and Campground, Winneshiek County

Thursday, February 26, 2015

Join Winneshiek County Conservation at a monthly book club focused  on readings related to and inspired by conservation, sustainability, and the natural world.  The conservation book club is free and open to the public and to all ages.

February's meeting will be held Thursday, February 26 at 6:30 pm in the public meeting room in the basement of the Decorah Public Library.

February's book is Barry Lopez’s Arctic Dreams, winner of the National Book Award. Arctic Dreams is an unforgettable study of the Far North, the marvelous and mysterious land of stunted forests and frozen seas, of muskoxen and narwhal, where sunrise and dusk are seasonal rather than daily phenomena. Lopez offers a thorough examination of this obscure world: its terrain, its wildlife, its history of Eskimo natives and intrepid explorers who have arrived on their icy shores.

What turns this incomparable work of natural history into a breathtaking study of profound originality is his unique meditation on how the landscape can shape our imagination, desires, and dreams. Its prose as hauntingly pure as the land it describes, Arctic Dreams is nothing less than an indelible classic of modern literature.

A limited supply of books are available for checkout at the library front desk or may be purchased from a local bookseller.

Future monthly meetings are currently scheduled for the 4th Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Participants are welcome to bring suggestions for future book discussions to each meeting.

Reading notes and discussion questions will be available ahead of time on the WCCB website, Facebook page, or by contacting WCCB.
