Geocaching 101 Workshop
Hartman Reserve Nature Center, Black Hawk County
Sunday, July 7, 2019
Looking for a fun, family-friendly way to exercise both mind
and body? Try geocaching (pronounced jee-oh-cash-ing), which is like a
modern-day treasure hunt. Instead of a worn map marked with an X, you use a GPS
unit or free app on your phone and a set of coordinates. And instead of hunting
for a buried chest, you're looking for a cache hidden in an eco-friendly site,
usually in nature.
Tom Freed and Mark Freed are avid geocachers with thousands
of finds all over the world between them. They will present Geocaching 101, an
hour-long workshop July 7 at 1:00 PM at the Hartman Reserve Interpretive
Center. The Freeds will cover geocache basics at the workshop, including
equipment or cell phone app necessary, types of caches and cache containers,
difficulty and terrain ratings, the latest caches installed at Hartman, and
more. Attendees will be able to use this information to find their first cache
at Hartman Reserve after the workshop. Additional experienced cachers will be
available after the workshop for conversation and questions.
For registered attendees, there will be a give-away drawing
for a free GPS unit, courtesy of Scheels. 4 Queens will be donating ice cream cups for all to enjoy :-) Registration for the workshop is
accepted online at www.BlackHawkCountyParks.com
under the Events tab.
Cost for the workshop is $2.00 per person, ages 5 and
under are free.
The entrance to Hartman Reserve is located at 657 Reserve
Dr., Cedar Falls. Please call 319-277-2187 with any questions.
