Passenger Pigeon   Hurstville Interpretive Center    August 22—December 10 The story of the passenger pigeon is unlike that of any other bird. With a population of 3 to 5 billion, it was the most abundant bird in North America. Yet human exploitation drove this species to extinction over the course of just a few decades.  2014 marks the centenary of this extraordinary extinction. To mark this anniversary, a temporary Passenger Pigeon Exhibit will be on display at the Hurstville Interpretive Center. It was developed by the Project Passenger Pigeon, is sponsored by Friends of Jackson County Conservation, in cooperation with Dubuque & Jones County Conservation Boards and Mines of Spain.  The exhibit focuses on the life history of the bird as well as conservation of species and habitat, and strengthens the relationship between people and nature.
