Monarch Monitoring

JOHNSON COUNTY EDUCATION PROGRAMS, Johnson County

Wednesday, June 15, 2022

Come out with a JCC Naturalist to help gather data for the Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP). A nationwide citizen science program that aims to document changes in monarch populations and habitat. Learn more about this program here.

No experience required! We will teach you everything you need to know. See below for examples of some of the activities that may take place at the site. This is a great opportunity to get experience doing field research, or for folks who just want to stay active and help gather data for scientists. The terrain we move through can be difficult at times, so please reach out if you have any questions about participating. This program is a best fit for adults and older children (9th grade and older).

Milkweed and Blooming Plant Survey - identifies and measures numbers of milkweed and blooming plants at the study site.

Monarch Egg and Larva Survey - a hunt for every egg, caterpillar, and chrysalis we can find within the study site.

Adult Monarch Survey - We search for adult butterflies at the study site.

Registration closes 24 hours in advance.

If you are fully registered, you can expect to receive an email "receipt" from MyCountyParks after registration. You will also receive an email from the leading naturalist a couple days in advance of the program. If you do not receive these emails, you may not be registered; call 319-645-1011 for assistance in this case.
