OWLS - Older Wiser Livelier Seniors - Yellow Banks Artifact Collection

Polk County Education Programs, Polk County

Tuesday, January 5, 2021

OWLS is going virtual. Collections of lithic (rock) and historic artifacts from three separate families have been donated to Polk County Conservation (PCC) over the past 30 years. The three collections include over 600 artifacts collected in or around what is now Yellow Banks Park in SE Polk County. Artifacts include a wide variety of projectile points, axes, celts, mauls, pottery sherds, grinding slabs, and a rare banner stone. The artifacts represent four distinct indigenous cultures spanning over 12,000 years of human inhabitance in the area. Currently, PCC staff are working to create a high quality exhibit in the Jester Park Nature Center to display these artifacts. This presentation will introduce the project, discuss park history, the showcase some of the most impressive artifacts.
