Senior Seed Harvest

Help JCC collect native prairie and wetland seed to be used for JCC ecosystem restoration projects in the county. The senior seed harvests are open to all ages. They are designed to be more accessible and require little or no hiking. These are led by a senior citizen volunteer who originally started these as volunteer events for retirees but has opened them up to all.
This event will start at the Red Haw Shelter Parking Area in F.W. Kent Park. Volunteers will walk a short distance on a paved road from the parking area to the collection area. This week, our focus will be Tall Coreopsis and Wild Bergamot. No special training is required for this event, nor prior experience. Instruction and species ID tips will be provided at the start of the program.
Volunteers should wear pants, closed-toe shoes, and pack a long-sleeve option. Collection will take place while standing on paved or limestone surface, and no travel into thick prairie vegetation is necessary.
Pack work gloves and a set of hand clippers if available. JCC will provide collection buckets.
Volunteers are welcome to take a small amount of seed home for their own native gardens/plantings.
Seed harvests are dependent on weather and dry seed conditions. We will cancel if seed is too wet from recent rain.
Registration automatically closes one day in advance. If you are fully registered, you can expect to receive an email "receipt" from MyCountyParks after registration. You will also receive an email from the leading naturalist a couple days in advance of the program. If you do not receive these emails, you may not be registered; call 319-645-1011 for assistance in this case.
