Project Wingspan Seed Harvest

JOHNSON COUNTY EDUCATION PROGRAMS, Johnson County

Wednesday, September 18, 2024

Project Wingspan is a program of the Pollinator Partnership. This program aims to increase pollinator habitat throughout the Midwest and Great Lakes regions. JCC is working as a partner for this program by conducting various prairie seed harvests on JCC prairies, to then distribute desired target species to new regional habitat plantings as designated by Pollinator Partnership. You can learn more about Project Wingspan here: https://www.pollinator.org/wingspan.

To volunteer for these seed harvests, volunteers will need to complete a few easy steps:

1) Take a quick pre-assessment online quiz (optional but requested)

2.) Watch 3 short training videos:

3.) Take a look at the Seed Collection Manual

4.) Take the quick post-assessment online quiz (optional but requested)

5.) Turn in the Volunteer Waiver for Project Wingspan

6.) Fill out the contact form and become certified

7.) Sign up for this harvest on this MyCountyParks event page.

Each of these steps with the appropriate links can be found through the Project Wingspan Volunteer webpage.

About this Sept 18 Harvest event: This event will start at the North Entrance to Cedar River Crossing. Volunteers will hike 1 mile into the property on a trail to start the harvest with partridge pea. If time remains, we may hike further to harvest ironweed. Volunteers can expect to hike between 2-2.5 miles at this event. Volunteers should wear pants, close-toe shoes, and bring a long sleeve shirt option. Volunteers should also pack water and a set of hand-clippers if available. (JCC can also provide several sets of hand clippers if unavailable).

This event is dependent on weather and dry seed conditions. If the seed is wet from recent rain, we will likely cancel this event. If the target species seed is not ripe, we may cancel or shift the target species/which projects this seed will benefit.
