Event Summary

Youth ages 12 to 18 are encouraged to help protect and enhance parks and natural area, and have fun in the process!  The first Buchanan County Youth Conservation Crew will be at Fontana Nature Center.  Subsequent dates will be at other Buchanan County parks and natural areas.  Conservation Crew will meet on the following Thursdays: June 14 and 28, July 12 and 26, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and August 9. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Each day, participants will join in leadership and education activities, and hands-on service learning. Crew members will be provided work gloves, water and snacks, and a crew member t-shirt. Members should dress to get dirty and be prepared to do physical conservation work. Equipment needed for projects will be provided on site.  Examples of projects include: invasive plant species removal, trail maintenance; brush clearing, bird house construction and maintenance; cleanups; wildlife monitoring; painting; planting; and more. Crew members will gain skills to last a lifetime, friendships, natural resource knowledge and abilities, and a stronger connection to the environment. Service hours may be used for community service hours at local schools.
