Blood Moon/Lunar Eclipse

OCT 07 2014 8:00 PM

Kuehn Conservation Area , Dallas County

Event Summary

Tuesday, October 7 ~ 8pm to Wednesday, October 8 ~ 8am
For the second time this year, the full moon will slip into Earth’s shadow for a lunar eclipse, creating the opportunity to see a blood red moon. To celebrate, the naturalists are planning a night out at Kuehn. Starting at 8:00 p.m., there will be a bonfire near the Nature Center, with discussions about how lunar eclipses occur and their role in historic events. Participants can sleep in their own tents at Kuehn that night or head home with the option to return. We will set alarm clocks for 3:00 a.m. so we can witness the passing of the shadows. The maximum eclipse and reddest color will be seen around 5:55 a.m. with the moon setting at 7:00 a.m., before the eclipse is complete. Participants who wish to spend the night must provide their own primitive camping gear and any snacks and drinks they desire. We recommend comfortable chairs and blankets as well. Registration is required for this free program. To register, please contact our office at 515-465-3577 or conservation@co.dallas.ia.us
