Winter Geocaching
DEC 31 2014 11:00 AM
Event Summary
“Just
because the temperatures have dropped and it’s snowing doesn’t mean we have to
put the GPS units away,” said environmental education coordinator Karess
Knudtson.
So get out your smartphone or
borrow one of the conservation board’s GPS units and go geocaching 11 a.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Horseshoe Bend Wildlife Area in Milford.
Meet at the warming house in the
Winter Sports Area and then bundle up and head outside to find four Ranger Rick
geocaches hidden throughout the park.
What is geocaching, you ask? According
to www.geocaching.com, the widely used “go to” for everything geocache related,
geocaching is defined as “a
real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices.
Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to
find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.”
Knudtson will guide people of
all ages --- grandparents and parents are invited to come along with their
children or grandchildren --- on a hike through Horseshoe Bend to search for
four caches hidden there.
Once the participants find the Ranger
Rick cache, they can read the clue on the enclosed card to figure out what Ranger
Rick character is represented at that stop, then stamp the animal’s footprint
on their souvenir passport, and finally record their names and the date in the
logbook.
Geocaching is an activity that
can be done year round, and a little snow can make the search even more
challenging and exciting.
Whether you’re an experienced
cacher or are completely new to the activity, take this time during winter
break to hone or learn a new skill. Please call 712-336-6352 to pre-register
for this free event.
The approximately one-hour Winter
Geocaching hike will end back at the warming house where a fun surprise will be
waiting.
