Iowa Junior Naturalist Program Introduction

Join our Hamilton County Naturalist at Shelter 2 in Briggs Woods Park for this Junior Naturalist family program. The statewide Junior Naturalist Program focuses on getting kids ages 6-18 to interact and connect with nature. This educational program promotes awareness of the natural and cultural resources of Iowa. The Junior Naturalist Program is supported by both the Iowa State Parks System and the Iowa County Conservation Board System. Parents are required to stay with and supervise their kids as we do the outdoor activities together. This program will focus on younger kids but older kids are welcome to attend. Program Schedule 

  • 10:00 to 10:30 am  Junior Naturalist Program Overview & Hands-On experience with Mammals Skins, Skull, and Tracks
  • 10:30 to 11:30 am  Butterfly and Grasshopper Safari with butterfly nets on Prairie Trail with our County Naturalist. We will observe what we catch in a Butterfly Net Box together and release afterwards. 
  • 11:30 to 11:45 am  Wildlife Games, Playgrounds Play, or Scavenger Hunt
  • 11:45 am to Noon  Sack Lunch at Shelter 2 together with our Naturalist.(Bring Your own Sack Lunch & Drink)
  • 12:00 pm  Depart (Sack Lunch with the group is optional)
