Codfish Hollow Hill Prairie Walk

Event Summary

Codfish Hollow Hill Prairie Walk Thursday, May 16 at 6 pm. Enjoy a guided hike through Ray Hamilton's reconstructed and remnant prairie. Ray will share his knowledge of prairie plants and native pollinators. Learn to identify many native prairie flowers, especially early blooming native species. This area has been managed as a local biological preserve for 34 years and is home to five-lined skinks, one of the worlds northern most population of original native purple coneflowers, prairie butterflies (one variety which may be visible on this trip is the only recognized population in eastern Iowa), seasonal nighthawk nesting, and seasonal woodcock nesting and lots more.

This Prairie Walk is sponsored by Jackson County Conservation Board, Iowa Prairie Network and Iowa Native Plant Society.Wear good walking shoes, long pants recommended and dress for the weather. Travel 1 mile north of Maquoketa on Hwy 62, turn right (east) on 35th Street, turn left (north) on 288th Ave, travel 1/4 mile to gate.
