Monarch Tagging
SEP 12 2020 1:00 PM
Event Summary
The monarch butterfly migrates thousands of miles to its wintering grounds in Mexico. Join a naturalist in learning more about the monarch’s life cycle and journey south. Be a part of the research by helping to catch and tag this year’s migrants. Monarch tagging programs are being held at the Hurstville Interpretive Center every Saturday in September from 1:00-3:00 pm (Sept. 5, 12, 19, 26) and Fridays, Sept 4 & 18 starting at 9:00 am. Nets will be provided. Program is free and open to all ages. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required.
Participants are asked to practice social distancing. Program will take place outdoors. Another great way to learn about butterfly life cycles is to rear caterpillars. Monarch caterpillars are available at the Hurstville Interpretive Center while supplies last. Stop out between 9:00-4:00 weekdays or Noon-5:00 on weekends to pick up a caterpillar to raise at home.
Please contact Jackson County Conservation at (563) 652-3783 to register or for more information. The Hurstville Interpretive Center is located 1 mile north of Maquoketa on Highway 61.
