Event Summary
Jackson County Archaeology: The Paul Sagers Collection
Presented by Lynn M. Alex and John Cordell, Office of the State Archaeologist, University of Iowa
Between 1925 and 1936 Jackson County native son, Paul Sagers, along with his brother Fay, collected over 16,000 prehistoric artifacts from 16 recorded sites including 13 rockshelters. Their collections, along with the careful notes and illustrations they made about their discoveries, have become a legacy for Iowa archaeology, helping to establish the sequence of prehistoric cultures still used today. Paul's dedication to sharing his collection produced the Sagers Museum, which Paul built himself. Today, his artifact collection, recently given over to the Office of the State Archaeologist at the University of Iowa, is being carefully documented for curation. Come hear about Paul's work, see some of the wonderful finds he made, and learn how the collection is being cared for at the University of Iowa.
Following the presentation, all are welcome to join in on a field trip to one of Paul's most important sites, the Levsen Rockshelter, locate at Buzzard Ridge WIldlife Area.
