Monarch Tagging

Hurstville Interpretive Center, Jackson County

Sunday, September 1, 2024

Monarch Tagging will take place Sundays September 1, 8, 15, and 22 at 1:00 PM at the Hurstville Interpretive Center.

Monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico for the winter. Help us catch and tag migrating monarchs in September. Data is then collected to learn more about their amazing journey.

We'll start with a presentation at 1:00 to talk about their life cycle, migration, and the tagging program.

Following the program, participants can borrow a net to go catch butterflies around the prairie to tag.

You can help with monarch research by catching the butterflies, placing a small tag on their wing, recording their information and releasing them to continue on their long journey. These tags help researchers to learn about the migration of the monarch.

Registration is requested for the monarch tagging programs. For more information or to register, call (563) 652-3783 or email conservation@jacksoncounty.iowa.gov.
