Williams Prairie was bought in the early 1900's by John Williams for use as a hay field. In the 1960's this prairie was discovered by botanists from the university of Iowa. By 1973 the land was deeded to the Nature Conservancy and in 1976 the area was dedicated as a biological preserve. Today, the Williams Prairie is being managed as a sedge meadow/wet prairie which is dominated by sedges, bluejoint grass, slough grass and big bluestem. More than 320 species of vascular plants and eight bryophytes have been reported on this site.
