Return of the Wood Duck

FEB 28 2010 1:00 PM

F.W. Kent Park , Johnson County

Event Summary

The wood duck is considered by many to be one of North American's most beautiful waterfowl species.  Today the wood duck is a very common waterfowl, but in the first quarter of the 20th century the wood duck populations had virtually disappeared.  Conservation practices, including regulated hunting, have helped this bird make an amazing return.  One of those conservation practices was the development and installation of artificial nesting structures for the wood duck.  The use of these structures, which were readily accepted by wood ducks as suitable nesting sites, allowed the populations to rebound enough to support conservative hunting in the 1940's.  Come learn more about this amazing conservation story and the life of the wood duck.  Participants will also construct their own wood duck box to take home or donate to a conservation agency to install.  There will be a $10 fee per wood duck box to cover the materials cost.  Family members can share in the construction of a single box.  All lumber will be precut.  Class size is limited to 20 wood duck boxs so register today by calling (319) 645-1011 or e-mailing bfreidhof@co.johnson.ia.us  Registration must be received by February 12th.
