Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program Sign-up

Event Summary

We’re looking for passionate volunteers to join our Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program team at Cedar River Crossing! Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just love being outdoors, this is a fantastic opportunity to make a real impact. By spending just a few hours in the field, you’ll help collect critical data that supports monarch conservation on a local and national scale. Plus, it’s a great way to connect with nature, learn more about pollinators, and be part of a community working toward positive change. Come be a part of something meaningful—join us in safeguarding the future of monarchs!

Below are the surveys we are planning to complete on this date (weather and volunteer dependent). We will divide duties based on your interest and experience (no experience necessary-we will teach you)!

1. Monarch Egg and Larva Survey  Participants search milkweed plants for monarch eggs and larvae.

2. Adult Monarch Survey  Participants walk the site to count the number of adult monarchs present and record their behavior.

The Integrated Monarch Monitoring Program (IMMP) is a nationwide effort to track and support monarch butterfly populations by gathering essential data on their habitats, breeding success, and overall health. Through community-driven science, volunteers help monitor milkweed presence, nectar resources, and monarch life stages, contributing valuable information that aids conservation efforts. This data not only informs scientists and land managers but also helps shape strategies to protect these iconic butterflies and their vital ecosystems.

This volunteer work can be physically demanding depending on the weather and the surveys being conducted. All volunteers should feel confident walking through uneven, muddy terrain and tall vegetation. We will encounter biting insects and poison ivy. This activity is best for adults or older (teen) children.

More information about the IMMP can be found on their website here: https://monarchjointventure.org/mjvprograms/science/integrated-monarch-monitoring-program
