Save the Monarchs: Monarch butterfly banding program at Wickiup Hill

Event Summary

Numerous monarch butterflies have been visiting the prairie flowers along the sidewalk at Wickiup Hill Learning Center, but many will soon be making the massive journey to Mexico.  Unlike most other insects in temperate climates, monarch butterflies cannot survive a long, cold winter.   International research and initiatives continue to protect the butterfly’s migration.  Linn County Conservation will be hosting Bring Back the Monarchs, September 4th 5:30p.m. to 7p.m. at Wickiup Hill (10260 Morris Hills RD Toddville, Iowa).  The monarch tagging program is sponsored by Monarch Watch.  Participants will be able to see the monarchs up close and learn about their amazing migration and the ecology of winter roosting sites.   Identification tags are placed on the wings of the butterflies and then released.    Cost $2.50/adult,  $1/child (16 and under) or $5/family.   Registration is not required.
