Prescribed Fire Workshop for Landowners
FEB 09 2023 8:30 AM
Event Summary
This workshop will be held at the Conservation Education Center at Marr Park in Ainsworth (Washington County Conservation).
The Prescribed Fire Workshop for landowners will cover a brief history of fire in Iowa, the benefits of prescribed fire on prairies and woodlands, how to set management goals and objectives for your area, how to write and use burn plans, selecting the right weather day for your fire, as well as tools and techniques to get the job done efficiently. Safety will also be stressed and covered in the class. This one-day class is not a certification, but rather a training to help participants gain more knowledge about fire and how it interacts on the landscape.
Landowners are encouraged to bring a map of the area they are interested in burning and instructors will help to answer area specific questions.
Besides knowledge, there are two other outstanding benefits of this class. 1. Participants will be allowed to check out a fire cache. It is equipped with wildland firefighting gear such as bladder bags, drip torches, Nomex suits, fire specific tools and some personal protective equipment. 2. Participants will get to meet other like-minded landowners, share ideas and strategies and hopefully exchange contact info so you can help each other apply prescribed fire to the landscape in a safe and effective way.
This class is sponsored by the Great Rivers Alliance of Southeast Iowa. Partners include US Fish and Wildlife Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, The Nature Conservancy, Des Moines, Johnson, Lee, Louisa, Muscatine, & Washington County Conservation Boards, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, the Bur Oak Land Trust, National Wild Turkey Federation, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever.
The Great Rivers Alliance of SE Iowa is a partnership of both public and private conservation agencies who work together to improve the ability of all people to care for the natural resources in Southeast Iowa. There will be a diversity of presenters at the workshop, each sharing their experiences and expertise.
The fee covers breakfast, lunch and a packet of take-home materials for each participant.
