Schoenjahn Wildlife Area

Discover Schoenjahn Wildlife Area in Mapleton
The preserve is a greenbelt along the Maple River, on the west edge of Mapleton. Louise Schoenjahn donated this 115-acre area in 1984 for wildlife management. In 1997, 0.76 acres were swapped for 10 acres between Morningside College and the Conservation Board, bringing the total to 125 acres. Hunting is prohibited. 7 Acres of restored native prairie will be planted this spring to add native habitat to the wildlife preserve. A Kayak/ Canoe access has been made into the Maple River on the southwest side of the bridge at the Schoenjahn Wildlife Area. By entering the river at the Schoenjahn Wildlife Area paddlers can enjoy a 5.7 mile trip to Grays Landing where they can use our newly created ramp to exit the river!
