Birding 101 With Nic Salick

Event Summary

Join experienced birders Nic Salick, Jason Andersen, and Michelle Biodrowski for a beginning birding class on May 20th, starting at 7:00 a.m.  Birding 101 will include a classroom and field session and will provide the knowledge and skills for amateur and beginner birders to accurately identify common and notable species found throughout the Midwest.  Learn to identify song birds and passerines from field marks, song, and behavior at one of the Loess Hills premiere nature preserves, Hitchcock Nature Center.   Hitchcock Nature Center’s nearly 1,300 acres was named Iowa’s first Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society and features Loess Hills woodland, oak savanna, and open prairie settings providing a broad range of habitats that support a diverse avian population.

The series can accommodate people of all experience levels but is intended for people with little to no experience.  Attendees should plan to bring and use their own pair of binoculars.  Attendees should note: the field session of the class will occur outdoors in the Loess Hills of western Iowa and may, at times, require pedestrian travel over difficult terrain.  Classes will meet the Bluestem Room (downstairs) at Hitchcock Nature Center’s  Loess Hills Lodge.

The fee for the class is $15 and includes a Sibley’s Field Guide to take home.  Pre-registration is required. To maintain an effective teacher-to-student ratio, class size will be limited and early registration is encouraged.  For additional questions call: 712-545-3283.
