Backyard Conservation: Rain Gardens, Native Plants, and More!
APR 19 2015 2:00 PM
Event Summary
Winneshiek County Conservation will be hosting “Backyard
Conservation Basics” at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 19 at the Lake Meyer Nature
Center. The program is free, open to all, and does not require registration.
Pollinator populations in Iowa are dwindling as their habitat and
food sources are becoming more and more scarce. Iowa’s soil is also rapidly
being depleted and its water quality is being degraded. Strong pollinator
populations, healthy soil, and clean water are all vital to Iowa’s agriculture,
communities, and natural resources alike. Fortunately, there are ways that individuals
can help protect and enhance our local wildlife habitat, soil, and water
quality.
This program will cover some of the ways that all community
members can help promote conservation and provide wildlife habitat in their own
backyard, whether that backyard is forty acres, a standard town lot, or an
apartment balcony.
Discussion will include incorporating native plants into
landscaping and gardening, controlling backyard runoff and erosion, increasing
pollinator habitat, and more. Information on local suppliers, assistance
agencies, and other resources will be provided.
Lake Meyer Park is located off of Highway 24 between Calmar and
Fort Atkinson. For additional information, please contact Winneshiek County
Conservation at (563) 534-7145.
