Snakes on the Plains: Surviving a Harsh Environment
FEB 17 2024 11:00 AM
Event Summary
Daniel D. Fogell, Herpetologist and Instructor at Southeast Community College in Lincoln, NE will present the following program. The Great Plains ecosystem is one of climatic uncertainty and extremes: heat and cold, drought and floods...just to list a couple. Survival on the Plains for any life form means being prepared for anything the climate can throw at you. The snakes of the Great Plains have survived thousands of generations of natural selection, developing, and maintaining adaptations that allow them to thrive there. In this presentation we will look at some of those adaptations and see how climate and geography have shaped snake species' diversity and distributions in the Great Plains - including Iowa, as well as how climate change might possibly affect distributions in the future. NOTE: Live snakes will be at the presentation. Limited to 100 people.
