Description
SUMMARY: This Naturalist
Intern position will assist the Head Naturalist with organizing, developing,
and coordinating a quality environmental educational program to the residents
of Tama County. They will also assist in the development and promotion of the
department through its website and social media pages. This position may
qualify as part of a college internship program through the summer camping
season or as the intern schedule permits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Researches, develops,
prepares, and presents programs, speeches and special events to various
groups including; school classes (preschool through senior citizens),
teacher in-services, sporting organizations, local civic and service
clubs, churches, and youth groups.
Researches, designs, and
builds educational conservation displays with supportive materials.
Researches and writes
articles for our conservation newsletter.
Assists with the development
of promotional brochures, news releases and information flyers.
Greet people entering the
building, answering any questions, providing directions and alerting staff
when someone is there to meet or visit them.
Answer phone calls, manage
calls by routing them to the proper people or taking messages.
Takes reservations for
shelters rentals and Nature Center rentals.
Assists with issuing
membership permits for our Izaak Walton Shooting Sports Facility.
Assists in the management
of the Outdoor Classroom.
Assist the Naturalist to
provide care for all animals used for educational purposes. This also
includes scheduling volunteers and or staff to care for the animals during
weekends and holidays.
Assist the Naturalist to
promote programs and upcoming events.
Assist the Naturalist in
cleaning the Nature Center facility.
Opens the Diorama Room
Exhibit, provide tours, and answer any questions people may have of the
Exhibit.
Perform other functions as
directed or as the situation dictates.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each

EDUCATION and/or
EXPERIENCE:
- Must be attending or planning to attend college
in the conservation /natural resource field.
REQUIRED UPON HIRE:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Valid Driver’s License (upon hire)
- Must have a good driving record
- Must be able to pass a background check.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability
to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, technical
procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present
information and respond to questions from the general public.
TECHNICAL SKILLS:
- Microsoft Windows and Office, email, and other
basic computer resources.
OTHER SKILLS AND
ABILITIES:

Ability to multi-task and
prioritize job activities to achieve maximum overall results.
- Ability to perform basic cleaning
maintenance.

Ability to provide
informative and professional assistance when working with the public,
customers and County personnel.

Ability to work with
others in the attainment of department duties and County goals.

Demonstration of good oral
and written communication and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of wildlife
protection, Law Enforcement and Conservation.
- Ability to interact with
individuals of all ages and backgrounds.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The
physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by
an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk
or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and use hands to
grasp, handle or feel. Also required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch,
crawl, push or pull, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must
frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up
to 20 pounds and occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.
