Description

Assists in providing direction for work activity of district crew by developing work lists, inspecting areas to determine needs, discussing safety and job standards with crew, and checking equipment condition and needs.

Assists District Park Ranger with the operation, reservation services, and maintenance of park campgrounds, shelters, lodges, and camping cabins.

Assists District Park Ranger with returning communications from the public and issues special use permits as necessary.Inspects condition of parks according to the County’s Risk Management Program and is responsible for general park safety and accident prevention.

Provides public safety by patrolling areas on a non-standard schedule, enforcing laws and park rules and regulations as required, issues citations, has authority to perform arrest of persons abusing facilities, violating traffic laws, or other state, federal or local laws and regulations.

Cooperates and coordinates with local law enforcement agency activities. Operates patrol vehicles and specialized law enforcement equipment.

Maintains authority to preserve the scene of a crime; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects.

Responds to unforeseen situations involving public safety & protection of public property, including emergencies such as accidents, rescues, spills, and disorders. Administers first aid / CPR as necessary.

Maintains law enforcement records and prepares reports.

Maintains mandated certifications for weapons qualifications including duty pistol, shotgun, rifle and taser. Maintains certifications related to crime and interactions with citizens.

Wears and/or uses certified ballistic resistant body armor, Armament System and Procedures, baton (ASP), and chemical spray as needed or required.

Utilizes personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: Fall protection safety harness, forestry helmet, chainsaw chaps, safety glasses, ear protection, various gloves, and steel toed shoes when appropriate.

Trains and monitors seasonal staff and provides guidance for other employees on the proper use of PPE.

Assists District Park Ranger with revenue accounting, inventory of facilities, record keeping, providing input regarding plans & developments, and attending staff meetings & other meetings as needed.

Assists District Park Ranger with monitoring Park facility custodial needs and restrooms, mowing practices, signs, roads, buildings, refuse/litter, water and electric systems, equipment operations and maintenance, Park furniture, playgrounds, fences, animal exhibits, etc.

Conducts district public water supply sampling and monitoring and makes necessary corrective actions in accordance with Iowa DNR and Linn County Public Health guidelines.

Participates in natural resource management activities to help manage native forest, prairie and wetland habitats.Maintains pesticide applicator's license and conducts hazardous material handling.

Operates and transports various types of equipment (see section below for illustrative list).Purchases necessary equipment, supplies and services approved by the District Park Ranger.

Supports the planning, design, and construction of park development projects.

Performs other related duties as assigned.Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product.

Listens to the "Voice of the Customer "and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

Associate's degree in park management, conservation, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or related field, or high school diploma and one (1) to three (3) years of experience in a related field required.

Criminal background check required.

Commercial Class A Driver's License with airbrakes and passenger endorsement required within 6 months.

Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

Ability to use organizational skills.

Ability to use basic math skills for applications such as balancing camping receipts, calculating pesticide application rates, etc.

Ability to operate equipment and/or tools including, but not limited to, skid steers, tractors, mowers, boat, dump trucks, trailers, snow removal equipment, chainsaws, forestry chippers, aerial bucket, lifts; patrol vehicles, law enforcement weapons/gear; and shop and hand tools.    

Ability to operate computers and related software.

Ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse cultures and socio-economic status.

Ability to establish/maintain good working relationships with, and between, co-workers, representatives of other organizations, volunteers, contract staff, and the general public.

Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting vehicles and equipment.

Ability to withstand strenuous physical labor in various weather conditions.

Ability to enforce all laws and regulations as required.

General Knowledge of natural resource management activities to help manage native forest, prairie and wetland habitats.

Knowledge of Iowa Criminal Code and Iowa Traffic Code.

Knowledge of materials, methods, practices, required to maintain and care for park buildings, grounds, and equipment.

Special Requirements 

Must pass all certified peace officer hiring requirements before offer of position such as MMPI, POST tests, and all physical fitness minimum requirements. Certification as a Peace Officer through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, CPR Certification, and completion of Advanced First Aid Training course required. Possession of a valid Iowa Driver's License required. Will be required to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License. Weekend, evening and holiday work required. Must pass a DOT physical examination which includes a drug test with random testing as determined by Linn County and Federal guidelines. Regular work attendance required. Must remain awake and aware of surroundings at all times.
