Naturalist

Job Duties

Maintain outdoor areas, butterfly garden, interpretive trail signs.  Maintain butterfly garden by weeding, applying chemicals to unwanted, non-native plants and walkways.  Weed-eating and maintaining puddling pond plantings.

Maintain state and federal permits and write annual reports.  Apply, monitor and document species of wildlife collected for educational purposes.  This allows writing and recordkeeping.  These permits also entail using equipment such as fishing equipment and water quality education equipment.

Coordination and performance of duties with other city, county, state and federal agencies, and non-profit conservation agencies.  Work with other departments coordinating activities, events, curriculum and tourism opportunities that involve community, education and interpretation.

Provide technical assistance and advice to the general public and other agencies up-to-date laws/practices and resources for answering their questions.

Submit year-end reports and monthly reports.  Working within annual budget.  Maintain records of contacts, programs activities, accomplishments and pre-planning for future budget year, as well as present budget year.

Perform promotional activities, including radio talk shows and press releases.  

Develop professional brochures, write and develop newsletters, maintain department social media pages, provide and take photographs that will attract the public to Marion County Conservation Board areas through tourism pamphlets.  Create interpretive signs for trails and observation areas.

Conduct species inventories in MCCB managed areas.
 

Job Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in environmental education, natural resources, biology or a related conservation program curriculum; or graduation from an accredited two (2) year college with a major in a natural resources field and minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in environmental education.
