Insect Pinning 101
Discover the fascinating world of insects with an introductory class to insect pinning. Kayla Gibson Pirkola, a naturalist with formal training in entomology, will guide participants through the intricate techniques of insect pinning. This hands-on class, designed for ages 8 and up, will be held on Sunday, July 14th at 2:00 PM at the Hurstville Interpretive Center in Maquoketa.
Dating back to the 17th century, insect pinning remains a prevalent practice for scientific researchers and hobbyist collectors. After learning proper insect pinning techniques, participants will pin two insect specimens from an assortment including cecropia moths, polyphemus moths, and swallowtail butterflies. Participants will take home their pinned specimens in a recycled insect pinning box.
A $10 fee covers all specimens and materials. Registration is required and will close 24 hours prior to the event.
