Story County Conservation (SCC) park users now have new, convenient options for exploring the water at two of the county’s parks: self-service kayak and paddle board rentals.

These self-service kiosks, or “vending machines,” will allow visitors age 18 and older to rent paddling equipment right from their smartphones without the hassle of loading up equipment and hauling it from home. Rentals will run exclusively through the kiosk company’s app, Rent.Fun.

Solar-powered smart lockers will store all paddling equipment, including kayaks, paddle boards, lifejackets, and paddles. Once rental information is completed in the app, the smart locker will open and provide access to equipment. After exploring the water, the user simply returns items to the locker where they got it, rental ends automatically, and the user’s credit card will be charged accordingly. Rentals cost $25 per two-hour rental, per vessel.

The new Rent.Fun kiosk locations are at Dakins Lake in Zearing and near the beach at Hickory Grove Park in Colo. Each park is set up with four vessels available for rental. Kayaks are available at Dakins Lake, while both kayaks and paddle boards are offered at Hickory Grove Park.

SCC hopes this new offering will provide access to water exploration to many new park users, without having to purchase, store, or haul their own personal vessel.

SCC would like to remind paddlers that payment, equipment maintenance, and customer service are exclusively handled by the Rent.Fun company.
