The 40-acre Schaefer Natural Area is located northwest of Gilbertville between the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and the Cedar River.  Native prairie grasses and floodplain timber provide habitat for a variety of wildlife.  The Cedar Valley Nature Trail and adjoining habitats provides excellent bird watching opportunities for the public.  No Hunting is allowed here due to limited access.

The Gilbertville Depot located south of this area at Washburn Rd. provides a parking lot and rest area for trail users.  This spot provides the closest access point to Shaefer Natural Area.

Location

Schaefer Natural Area is located 1.5 miles north of the Gilbertville Depot. The Gilbertville Depot is located at the intersection of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and Washburn Road just west of Gilbertville.  You must walk or ride your bike north on the Cedar Valley Nature Trail to get to the entrance of Schaefer Natural Area.  The Gazebo is located at the north end of Schaefer Natural Area.  The Gazebo provides a panoramic view of the Cedar River.
