Sylvan
T. Runkel, Iowa’s foremost naturalist, learned about nature from his
grandmother, who lived in the southern Illinois log cabin where he spent his
summers. His passion for adventure, wild places, and wild things led Sylvan to
a career as a forester, botanist, and naturalist. Injuries suffered when
Sylvan’s glider crashed on D-Day did not stop his wilderness treks, or his
dedication to teaching others about conservation. Iowans came to know “Sy’” as
a gentle citizen whose wildflower books, nature hikes, and TV appearances
emphasized his respect for our planet – and for ALL our fellow “citizens.”
