The original Heery Woods Nature Center was built in 1988. In 2021, the Nature Center was expanded and re-named the Allan and Fayette Meyer Nature Center.

The Nature Center serves as the hub of the Butler County Conservation Board.

Along with the main offices of the conservation board, visitors can find exhibits about flora and fauna found in and around Butler County, live animals and much more.

The expansion project continues with the addition of interactive and educational displays - as funding allows. Current displays include live animals, a log cabin, an augmented reality sand table, prairie root display, and historical artifacts. Work is underway on the prairie display as well as a large tree that visitors will be able to climb up into an eagle nest. We hope these will be in place by the end of 2025. We appreciate your patience as we better our facilities for the education and enjoyment of our visitors. And donations are still being accepted to help us finish the project.

Environmental education for schools, youth, special interest groups and the public can be scheduled with the full-time naturalist - Annette Wittrock - by phone (319-346-6551) or e-mail (awittrock@butlercounty.iowa.gov).

All public events and updates will be advertised on the Butler County Conservation Board Facebook page, mycountyparks.com, Instagram, in local newspapers and on the radio.
