JUL 08 2014 9:00 AM
Event Summary
Course Date: July 8-10, 2014
Course Times: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm each day
Location: Briggs Woods Park - Legacy Cabin, 2490 Briggs Woods Trail, Webster City, IA
Cost: $150 per attendee
Sign up for one day or all three! Focus on 18 of the Midwest’s many edible wild plants. You’ll gain deep knowledge of each plant: you’ll see it multiple times in its habitat, and you will learn how to positively identify it. You’ll hear what part of it is edible, when to harvest that part, and you’ll gain experience in processing and preparing it for eating.
Tasting some of the better edibles is part of the adventure. Can you imagine mulberry taffy? How about a DRDC malted milkshake? (DRDC = Dandelion Root Dark Chocolate.) You will have a chance to look at, use, and buy the best reference books available.
Instructor - Mike Krebil
Mike retired from 35 years of teaching seventh grade
science in Iowa and Michigan, much to the chagrin of parents who were hoping
their son or daughter would have him for a teacher. A naturalist and nature
center director before becoming a teacher, Mike was famous for getting kids
outdoors, and for teaching science research skills by experimenting with wild
foods. Honors include Michigan Science Teacher of the Year, Michigan
Environmental Educator of the Year, Keokuk (Iowa) Teacher of the Year, and
being inducted into the National Wild Foods Association Hall of Fame. He has served
as vice president and newsletter editor of Iowa’s Prairie States Mushroom Club
and is an occasional contributor to the Iowa
Outdoors magazine. Mike is well known in the Midwest Wild Edibles &
Foragers Society, a Facebook group, where he answers questions, identifies
plants and mushrooms, and provides experienced-based insights on harvesting,
processing, preparing, and storing edible wild plants.
