The park has a significant historic background in that it was the first highway rest area developed and maintained by the Iowa Highway Commission and served as a pattern for the development of other such areas throughout the state. It is located nearly in the exact center of Hardin County. The park consists of a shelter house, portable type restrooms, playground equipment, and a suspended foot bridge and picnic area. The park is now a designated Safety Rest Area.
