Gardening for Beginners Series

McFarland Park, Story County

Saturday, January 25, 2025

Join us, and our partners from Mustard Seed Farms, for a beginner gardening workshop series to learn all of the basics to starting your own backyard garden. Whether you just need a place to start or need to develop a little greener thumb, this beginner gardening series is for you. Our goal is to go through each season to help you, and your garden, grow with confidence and success!    If you attend all four you will receive a gift card to a local Greenhouse!

Part one (January 25th): The first session is all about gathering the information and tools you need to get started in the winter, designing and preparing your garden, soil health, indoor seed preparation.

Part two (April 6th): The spring session will be about planting your garden, transplanting seed starts, watering, and weeding. We will also explore the best practices for maintaining a healthy garden once its growing and some of the tools you can use to make gardening tasks more efficient.

Part three (June 28th): During the thick of the summer growing season we will check in to see how the gardens are growing. We will discuss garden tending, watering, weeding, diseases that might affect your plants, and critters that you might see in your garden as well. We will also dive into harvest techniques and how to tell when to pick produce, as well as what tasty recipes to use with what you grew. We might briefly talk about annuals vs perennials and briefly discuss commonly used flowers/ plants in hanging baskets and planters as well.

Part four (September 13th): Our last session will focus on fall harvest and preserving the harvest. We invite you to bring in produce to swap with other participants if you like. We will have produce and food to sample as well as recipes to take with. We will share stories of how our gardening seasons went and discuss harvest techniques. We will also learn about the basics to canning and preserving your leftover produce.

Cancellation Policy: Unless otherwise stated, refunds can be issued less a $5.00 processing fee per event for cancellations prior to the registration deadline. No refunds will be made after the registration deadline. To cancel a registration, please call (515) 232-2516.
