Delaware

Silver Lake at Delhi is the only natural lake in NE Iowa. Since pioneer days, this lake has been a significant feature to the landscape of Delaware County. Records show that in:

• 1856 - William Sylvester and Elisha Brady built a saw mill and then used it as a grist mill
• 1862 - The mill was turned into a distillery by George Maxwell
• 1867 - The building was destroyed
• 1916 - A survey by the State Highway Commission pointed out the importance of the lake. Nearly all of the supply of ice for the town of Delhi was cut out of Silver Lake in the winter months. It was also a popular fishing and picnic grounds. They recommended the area be used as a park for public recreation
• 1923 - The land around the lake was deeded to the Iowa Conservation Commission by Mrs. Emma L. Brayton
• 1956 - Iowa Conservation Commission created Silver Lake State Park
• 1964 - The park was deeded over to the Delaware County Conservation Board.

Today the 60.0 acre park continues to be a focal point for the local community. The 38.0 acre lake with its easy access provided recreation for canoers, boaters and fishing. This is a great place for families and children to try their luck catching bluegills, bass or an occasional northern pike. Boating is allowed with a no wake limitation.

Silver Lake Park is located on the southeast edge of Delhi in sections 16, 20, 21 of Delhi Township (T88N-R4W).

This park is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm

Closures

All parks and Natural Areas remain open all year. However, facilities are closed to vehicle traffic and allow only walk-in access during the late fall and winter season. Parks with campground are usually open from mid-April through mid-October.
